HAIR TRANSPLANT

What is it?

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves relocating healthy hair follicles from a donor area—typically the occipital region (back of the scalp) or other parts of the body—to areas affected by hair thinning or baldness.

It is most commonly used to treat pattern baldness but can also help restore hair after trauma or medical conditions. The goal is to achieve natural-looking, permanent hair growth in the recipient area.

When to consider it?
  • Hormone-induced hair loss unresponsive to medical treatments.
  • Traumatic hair loss on any part of the body.
  • Hair loss due to a medical condition, after the condition has stabilised.
Types of Hair Transplantation
  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): Individual follicular units are extracted directly from the donor area and transplanted to the recipient site. This minimally invasive technique is the preferred approach at Neotis due to quicker recovery time and minimal scarring.
  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation): A thin strip of skin with hair is removed from the donor area, from which follicular units are extracted and transplanted to the recipient site.
Pre-Requisites
  • Normal blood investigations.
  • Positive attitude and realistic expectations.
  • Medical fitness certification.
Duration

A session typically lasts 8 to 10 hours, depending on the number of grafts needed. On average, 2,000 to 4,000 follicles may be transplanted in a single session, based on the size of the balding area and the availability of healthy donor hair.

Post-Procedure Care

After the procedure, it’s important to keep your scalp clean and dry for the first few days and avoid touching or scratching the grafts. Sleep with your head slightly elevated for about 3 to 5 days to help minimise swelling. You can begin gently washing your hair with a prescribed shampoo after 3 to 5 days, based on your doctor’s instructions. Avoid strenuous activities, direct sun exposure, and wearing headgear for at least two weeks.

Take any prescribed medications to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection. It’s normal for the transplanted hair to shed initially—new growth usually begins within three to four months. Follow-up appointments are scheduled for days 5 and 15, followed by monthly check-ins for at least six months to monitor progress.
