CYST REMOVAL SURGERY
What are Cysts?
Cysts are small, round bumps that form under the skin, commonly located on the face, neck, or trunk. They are closed, sac-like structures. Cysts develop when dead skin cells, sebum, or hair become trapped beneath the skin.
These formations can vary in size and may or may not cause discomfort. If left untreated, cysts can grow, become painful, or become infected, often releasing a foul-smelling substance. In some cases, the central opening of the cyst may be plugged by a small blackhead.
Diagnosis
- Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC): A needle is used to extract a sample from the cyst to check for any abnormalities.
- Histopathology: A sample is sent to a lab for a more detailed examination to determine the exact nature of the cyst.
Treatment
- Minor Surgery: Complete removal of the cyst and its capsule to prevent recurrence. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia.
When to opt for surgery?
- Pain or infection: If the cyst becomes painful, swollen, or infected.
- Cosmetic concerns: Cysts on visible areas, like the face, may require removal for aesthetic reasons.
- Recurrent cysts: If the cyst reappears after being drained or excised previously.
Procedure
- Pre-procedure Preparation: Normal blood investigations to ensure suitability for surgery and a thorough consultation to assess the size, type, and location of the cyst.
- Surgical Process: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area where the cyst is located.
- Incision and Drainage: The cyst is opened, and its contents are drained to alleviate pressure and discomfort.
- Minor Surgery: The cyst may be removed completely along with its capsule to prevent recurrence.
If necessary, intralesional injections (steroid injections) may be used to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
Post-Procedure Care
- Most patients heal within 1-2 weeks, depending on the size and location of the cyst. In some cases, scar revision treatments may be offered to improve the appearance of any scarring left behind.
