MEDICAL GRADE CHEMICAL PEEL
What is it?
A chemical peel is a treatment involving a solution of exfoliating agents applied to the face to remove the rough upper layer of skin, stimulating the regeneration of new skin cells. This process tightens and smoothens the skin, reducing the appearance of lines, blemishes, and age spots. It also evens out pigmentation, leaving the skin with a fresh, clean, and radiant look. A chemical peel treatment typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.
Types
Chemical peels come in various types, suited to different skin conditions and types, ranging from sensitive to coarse, heavily sun-damaged skin. These peels are categorised by their strength and depth of penetration into the skin:
Superficial Peels:
- Targets the outermost layer of skin.
- Improves texture, pigmentation, and fine lines.
- Minimal downtime; redness can be concealed with makeup.
Medium Peels:
- Penetrates deeper into the skin.
- Suitable for wrinkles and moderate pigmentation issues.
- Requires some recovery time, with redness or mild peeling.
Deep Peels:
- Addresses severe conditions such as deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, and acne scarring.
- May cause swelling, blisters, and peeling for up to two weeks.
- Requires greater downtime and more post-treatment care.
- Not commonly recommended for Indian skin types due to the risk of hyperpigmentation and sensitivity.
Regardless of the type of peel, post-treatment skin is more sensitive, so maximum sun protection is essential.
Which chemical peel is right for you?
Chemical peels induce a controlled injury to the skin, replacing part or all of the top layers of skin. To determine the best chemical peel for you, the following factors are considered:
- Skin type and tone.
- Severity of the skin condition, including ageing or sun damage.
- Desired results.
- Acceptable level of downtime and recovery.
- Deeper peels provide more dramatic results but come with increased recovery time and potential risks, such as post-treatment pigmentation changes.
- Patients with darker skin tones may benefit more from a series of superficial peels rather than a single deep peel to minimise complications.
- Younger patients with minimal sun damage and fewer wrinkles often require only a superficial peel.
What can chemical peels treat?
- Sun damage.
- Rosacea.
- Wrinkles and fine lines.
- Pigmentation changes.
- Clogged pores.
- Acne scarring.
