CORNS SURGERY

What are Corns?

Corns are thickened, rough patches of skin that develop on pressure points, most commonly on the soles of the feet or palms. Which can result in hardened bumps, tenderness, discomfort, and a flaky, dry, or waxy appearance.

Diagnosis
  • Clinical examination and patient history.
  • X-ray (to identify any underlying structural issues).
Treatment

Non-Surgical

  • Wearing properly fitted footwear and socks.
  • Using cushioned pads or orthotics to relieve pressure.
  • Applying topical exfoliants or salicylic acid-based treatments.

Surgical
For persistent or recurrent corns that cause significant discomfort or when underlying structural issues are present, surgical treatment may be required:

  • Radiofrequency Excision: The corn is removed using precise radiofrequency waves, minimising damage to surrounding tissue.
  • Cryotherapy: The corn is frozen with liquid nitrogen to destroy thickened skin.
  • Punch Excision: A specialised instrument is used to excise the corn with precision.
  • Excision and Closure: The corn and any contributing bony prominence are removed surgically, followed by careful closure of the wound.
Post-Surgery Care
  • Protect the surgical site with appropriate bandaging.
  • Use custom footwear or orthotics to prevent recurrence.
  • Follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.
