DERMATITIS

What is it?

Dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a skin condition that causes inflammation, redness, and irritation. It can occur in both acute and chronic forms and is commonly triggered by allergens, irritants, or genetic factors. Dermatitis leads to discomfort and can affect various parts of the body, often recurring over time.

Who gets Dermatitis?

Dermatitis affects about one in every five people during their lives. While it can occur at any age, it commonly starts in childhood. Individuals with a family history of eczema or other skin disorders are more likely to develop dermatitis. People exposed to irritants or allergens also have an increased risk.

Causes
  • Allergens: Such as pollen, pet dander, certain foods, or chemicals.
  • Irritants: Chemicals, soaps, detergents, or frequent exposure to water.
  • Genetic factors: Family history of eczema increases risk.
  • Environmental factors: Stress, temperature fluctuations, and harsh weather conditions.
Symptoms
  • Acute dermatitis: Red, swollen, and blistered rash that develops quickly.
  • Chronic dermatitis: Darker, thickened, and often scratched areas of skin.
Treatment
  • Emollients: Regular use of moisturizers to lock in moisture and repair the skin barrier.
  • Topical steroids: To reduce inflammation during flare-ups.
  • Topical immunomodulators.
  • Oral immunomodulators: In severe or persistent cases.
  • Antihistamines: To relieve itching.
  • Antibiotics: If the skin becomes infected due to scratching.
