PHOTOTHERAPY

Phototherapy is a trusted dermatological procedure that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo. Its origin dates back to ancient Egypt, where sunlight was combined with herbal remedies for skin diseases. Modern advancements have made phototherapy a safe, convenient, and effective option for managing skin conditions.

Types

1. Ultraviolet B (UVB) Light Therapy

UVB is a natural component of sunlight that helps treat various skin conditions. Treatment begins with brief exposure in seconds, gradually increased to a few minutes per session. It is commonly used in clinical settings and may be combined with other topical therapies for improved results.

Narrow-Band UVB (NB-UVB, 311nm)

A more precise form of UVB therapy, NB-UVB emits light at 311 nm. It has shown higher efficacy and fewer side effects, making it increasingly popular among dermatologists.

2. Ultraviolet A (UVA) Light Therapy

UVA is also effective, especially when combined with photosensitizing medication. This treatment, known as PUVA, can clear lesions in longer exposure times (few minutes).

Benefits

  • Proven Efficacy:
Studies show significant skin clearance in UVB-treated patients and NB-UVB-treated patients. PUVA is also highly effective for certain skin conditions.
  • Non-Invasive:
A gentle, repeatable process requiring minimal downtime.
  • Customisable:
Treatment duration and intensity are tailored to each patient’s needs and skin type.

Treatment

  • Sessions typically last from seconds to a few minutes.
  • Most patients require 20 sessions to see noticeable improvement.

Phototherapy remains a powerful, time-honoured solution for managing skin conditions, offering relief and improved quality of life for patients worldwide.
